Let me guess you can’t build it in flight?

Why not?
There is no stand provided, but with a acrylic stick in the jet exhausts it should work. I thought I have seen such a model but I can't find the pictures.
You can open or close the weapon bay in flight, the fit of closed lids is perfect. The fit of the landing gear lids may be not that perfect but it should be possible to close them.
Even a pilot is provided.

I have not tried that specific one, but I like MR.PAINT colors and they offer a two layer paint for the F-35:

I absolutely do not doubt about the kit's quality but do you guys think it is worth paying that much price for that?
I want to know your opinion.

On the HLJ page is stated "This item is discontinued and is not expected to come back into stock."

What might be the background for this?

Could it be a rights issue? On the Tamiya home page nothing is mentioned.

I asked HLJ and they answered quickly:
"Unfortunately this means that we have taken as many orders as we expect to be able to fill with the amount of product we're likely to receive. Even if we were to accept additional orders at this time, we would not be able to fill them.
There's a chance that the manufacturer may re-release the item, but at this time we unfortunately have no news regarding a reissue."
Interest seems greater than the first edition ...

wow, I find hard to believe Tamiya won't capitalize on this massive success and re-release even in different version/configuration

Tamiya didn't release a long nose Phantom, despite Japan producing the F-4EJ locally. They released the B version even though there are already B models on the market.
I expect somebody (ie Meng) will release a C model as soon as there are quite a few NAVY squadrons operating the type. Obviously an A model will find its way on my bench somewhere around the end of the decade, when the first ones arrive in Greece.

Early images show absolutely MASSIVE RAM tape. I excited for the quality of the build, disappointed by the tape. Perhaps it can be sanded back?

I figure I'm going to get this regardless for the engineering alone. I'll be going for the newer single color finish instead of the early generations that make it stand out so much more.
