These are the first pictures of a new project that will accompany the two Tornados at the workbench: a highly interesting machine, in the original.... and as a kit! Special Hobby does a good job here, but that does not mean that there is no need for filling and priming. This even lavishly 🙂

Watching, of course! (I have built the model of this beautiful plane from Planet Model kit some time ago... this one looks more detailed, nevertheless...)

So nice to see such planes, as the Crusader or this here Bugatti on your workbench! 👍

Thank you for your comments mates! I'm glad you like your choice of plane - there's so much fascinating stuff out there!

The construction is progressing: what is not (any longer) visible here are the numerous sanding and filling processes that made these soft and organic-looking form transitions possible. I am a bit proud of the sharp trailing edges: these were made with sandpaper, built out of the box one would have had very thick sandwich-like edges as a result.

I show you a few pictures of the first colour application with Gunze H14. The shiny surface - and before that the colour shades of the preshading - made it clear that this has to be touched up and sanded down again. You can now see the result of these efforts.
Please excuse the dust on the model, it is still from sanding 🙂

Indeed, filling and sanding is certainly the one major challenge on this otherwise quite comfortably designed building. I am now feeling my way towards a colour tone that appears right to me and, finally, a degree of gloss that looks coherent.
Last but not least, it will be exciting to see how the one-piece canopy fits. This will literally be the last step in the construction and should hopefully work without any problems; the fitting tests before painting have made me quite confident.

I read - and can neither confirm nor refute this - that the dark blue in which the replica was painted was probably a misinterpretation of a primer as the final color and that the final color would have been the french racing blue we know from the Bugatti cars (and thus the paint the restored original plane in Oshkosh received). So, take your pick. 🙂

Thank you, I'm glad you like the "Bugatti"! Michael, your advice sounds very plausible; in the meantime I have lightened the blue-violet considerably. Now it should at least come close to the Bugatti blue. The fact that the original machine was never painted, as far as I know, is somewhat relaxing - or do you know something else, Michael?
At the moment the canopy is in progress; brake cables will be added to the undercarriage and a pitot tube to the left wing - then nothing should stand in the way of assembling the finished parts!

Hi Roland, no, according to the information I had access to, the original machine was never painted. Looking forward to your progress.

Thanks Michael- and I will await with anticipation your Bugatti 100 in its original wooden dress!
The following three pictures show the Bugatti in the home stretch: the surfaces should be able to stay like this - only the dust will be removed! I am curious about the effect of the undercarriage and of course the light aluminium framed cockpit glazing.

I was able to finish the "Bugatti" this morning and also take a few photos. I find them quite photogenic, which is not surprising with these clean and pure forms.
The kit, as described, has its challenges, but is unreservedly and happily recommended for the more ambitious modeller - it's great that such fascinating aircraft are offered in kits that are easy to build. Special thanks are due to the commitment of Special Hobby!
Apart from this: I hope you like the pictures as much as I enjoyed building the kit!

The result is top and the photos are beautiful. My next challenge will be to master the wing edges as immaculate as you did.

Thank you very much for this positive feedback! You will do this beautifully, I look forward to seeing the result of your "wooden" Bugatto100!

That is the most beautiful bird out of this kit I have seen so far 👍
I think the blue is still a bit to dark for Bugatti blue at least on some pics, but anyway - great model!

Kinda special, Roland. I like the model and color. Did this plane exist in real?

Thank you for your positive feedback! Lode, the Bugatti 100 did indeed make it from the drawing board to built reality in the late 1940s, but shortly before the planned maiden flight in May 1940, the German offensive against France began - followed, as we know, by the country's swift defeat. The half-finished (and still unpainted) Bugatti 100 was hidden from the Germans - and never flown. Recently, enthusiasts put a true to the original replica in the air; however, it ended tragically in a crash.

Just watching your build on a big screen after having looked at it on my mobile only. I am even more impressed by the very clean work that emphasize the sleek lines of this plane so beautifully. By the way: does the scale 1:48 model include the actuators for the landing gear? In the small scale kit they are omitted.
Allow me to add a link to another beautiful site with more information about this racer and a hommage to Scotty Wilson who build and flew the replica. He died in a fatal crash on another test flight in 2016. It also points out the indespensible role of de Monge in designing the plane and all the ingenious technical solutions.

You have done the model justice Roland 👍
In my opinion, every Bugatti design is sheer beauty.
Including the Bugatti Autorail 1930 that I saw in Cité de train Mulhouse.

Hi Roland, I'm so glad you've put your Bugatti 100 up for show. I was given one by an incredibly generous friend of mine and, as doubtlessly you found out yourself, there are plenty of contemporary photos but not that many kit builds.
I'm so glad you've put you pictures up that I feel I should throw rose petals at your feet from here on.
Lovely build of a most attractive and, sadly, tragic aircraft.
Cheers …
Grant

Undoubtedly a beautiful racing plane, I am very happy that you like my interpretation!
