Oh, I missed the pre-opening credits sequence... Joining now... Popcorn not even too cold yet, all fine 👍

Bernhard, I have to say I really like the way you are actually keeping some of the original model during your builds... Re-assures me we are in the same hobby😉😉

Air intakes: the fit is OK but it isn't Tamiya and cleaning is required. I used for this task CA as filler and a small oval milling head. For the end (smooth) finish I used as usual ethyl acetate (plastic welder).

Bernhard Schrock
Yesterday I worked on the hump (engine & gear housing). I highly recommend a sequence that is different from the kit instructions: complete the whole hump and attach it to the fuselage. This way it's easier to exactly assemble the puzzle.
The edge of the hat should be thinned down because it's a thin sheet in the original (approx 1 mm in the kit).

Quick question: I noticed you are using a milling device in one of your photos. Any advice for using such drill bits? Never tried it myself, have something ordered, but heh they are cheap tools and I am not even sure what it will be like. I don't even know if such tools are supposed to be sharpened or not.
 11 October 2019, 08:53
Bernhard Schrock
Hi Treehugger. The minitool (Bully of Minicraft) is my best friend.Although the tool is more than 30 years old this is the best choice. I don't know another comparable product. It has 2 ball bearings. In connection with the selfmade adjustable power supply (see picture 21) and set of 6 collets (Spannzangen) it's possible for me to drill 2 mm long and 0,2 mm holes or thin large areas with a large milling head. IMO the right power supply is the key for success: too high RPM or too much torque is the biggest problem when you have to do small drilling/milling jobs. In the lowest position of the potentiometer I have a speed of 100 RPM and I'm able to stopp the collet with one finger.
 11 October 2019, 15:05
Treehugger
Do the miling head have to be sharp to tear away plastic you think?
 11 October 2019, 19:36
Bernhard Schrock
Sorry: I don't really know what you mean... there are different milling heads for different uses (see picture 22).
 12 October 2019, 08:01
Treehugger
Do you know what a sharp knife means? I would guess that such milling heads have a cutting blade of sorts around the head, or maybe they don't. I would think that if the milling head was just a round sphere, it wouldn't bite into the plastic.

Research help needed: does have #92 / JMSDF Merlin's the last „wall mounted" seats in the ramp area?
 15 October 2019, 18:25
Richmond
Treehugger - You can use a rotary tool for 'milling' as well - I use the Dremel along with the Dremel accessories - they fall under Engraving and are called up as cutters - dremel.com.au/au/en/..;Application=Engrave - I haven't blunted one yet but if I did I would just go and buy a replacement.

Excellent Office, Bernhard!

Thank you Nathan, thank you Holger. In the net I found only one useful picture of the JMSDF Merlin's cockpit. Fortunately there are several pics taken from the front. So I could determine that the main color of the cockpit is grey with a saturation about 60-70%. The cushion of the seats is a bit lighter than the seat. Side panels are black or nearly black. In comparison with color of the screens the middle console and the hood are not 100% black but 85-90% grey.

What coordinates did you enter on the keyboard? The photo is to small to be read from the screen.
Fantastic cockpit!
 1 November 2019, 18:24
Bernhard Schrock
Thx bughunter. 53,75 Nord, 9,56 East... 🙂
Yesterday I spent more than one hour for detailing and refining the cargo hook bay. And today I realized that JMSDF Merlin's don't have a fixed cargo hook 🙂 the cargo hook will be mounted on H-shaped mount only if needed.

Thx mates for your nice support. A little bit progress. Meanwhile I compared EACH kit part with a he pictures of the JMSDF because it seams that they are overall differences between the HC-3...

Hello Bernhard, long time of silence from me, had a few "minor" work&life topics to sort, kept me from the hobby long enough, the upside is so many beautiful things & work to study... Especially your progress, which would immediately qualify as a maintenance manual for helicopter crews😉 Keep up the good work, it´s a pleasure to follow as always!

You always amaze me with what you scratchbuild, those blinds are awesome.👍👍👍
 23 December 2019, 22:48
Bernhard Schrock
Hi Mates, I'm very surprised about the feedback concerning the blinds. Thank you. Fortunately the rear and front framing is molded as one part and so it was possible to install the blinds before gluing the framing on the fuselage. It's made from very thin paper and 0,22 mm guitar string. The holes are punched with a 0,55 mm needle (the end cuttet flat and sharpened).
I wish you and your family happy and healthy Christmas. Happy modeling!

Zsolt Czegle
Awesome work!
 24 December 2019, 08:58
Slavo Hazucha
The blinds got all the credit, and not without merit, but I'll lay in a word for all the added switches and buttons on the cockpit PE's as well... Way to go dealing with the lack of plasticity the use of PE's brings in so many cases! 👍

Have a happy christmas & some great time with family!

Wow, another masterpiece in doing 👍

Moin Bernhard,
 25 December 2019, 13:27
Bernhard Schrock
I wish all Mates happy new year!
Yesterday I managed one of the most important/difficult tasks: installing the windscreen. I waited with this task as long as possible to preventing airbrushing-dust and sanding-dust. As usual I used my combo-technique: glue first with minor drops of CA in place, seal the gaps with Future and fill the remaing gaps with CA.

Just an awesome build so far. Your attentation to detail amazes me.

Walkways. I got a tip from Florian that the walkways in the kit and on the decal sheet are not really correct. Indeed the light grey is too light have a touch of pink and looks really strange.
So again I had to improvise. I sprayed a undiluted mix of middle gray H125 and matt clear H49 with low pressure on the kits walkways. As a result I got after cutting in shape rough surface like a anti skid mat.

Wieder mal vom Allerfeinsten, Bernhard.
 9 January 2020, 09:57
Bernhard Schrock
Thank you Mates.
Learning by Doing!
 13 January 2020, 09:03
Treehugger
Looks nice. I wonder, are you done masking the clear parts (which you have removed), or are you finished with the airbrushing stuff?
 13 January 2020, 09:34
bughunter
Again impressive - the exact build of all that small parts and the correctness of color borders/masking 👍
 13 January 2020, 16:28
Clifford Keesler
Outstanding Bernhard.
 14 January 2020, 01:14
Ben Schumacher

 14 January 2020, 08:39
Harry Eder
Great job so far Berhard! For me it´s the best Merlin I´ve seen in scale! 👍
 14 January 2020, 12:07
Bernhard Schrock
Treehugger: the airbrushing is completed. The small side windows already has the black rim, but I want to put them in last because I maybe need to get rid of some dust.
Bughunter & Clifford: glad you like it. But is time consuming...🙂
 14 January 2020, 17:45
Bernhard Schrock
 14 January 2020, 17:48
Slavo Hazucha
Just great 👍 48-scale is supposed to have a certain level of detail, but the clarity of your execution is in it´s own galaxy... No weathering or any effects needed to lead the eye away from imperfections, since there simply are none...

Welche Farbe hast Du benutzt?
 20 January 2020, 08:11
Luc B
splendid!
 20 January 2020, 08:25
Treehugger
I wonder, when working on such things as details like the nose wheel: Do you make sure you seal the paint for such rubber like stuff, and then control the shine with vanish afterwards, or do you leave the rubber paint as is, and just add pigment/wash to it?
 20 January 2020, 10:11
Bernhard Schrock
Thank you Guys.
For airbrushing tires I used as usual dark grey matt (HU32) und middle grey (HU125) for washing.
My philosophy is "no varnish as possible". That what you overal see is the original paint: engine grey, orange, red, grey,,,,
 20 January 2020, 10:30
Maciej Bellos
Great tip for the tires! Thanks!
 20 January 2020, 11:04

 20 January 2020, 11:42
Bernhard Schrock
Jou: Humbrol.
 20 January 2020, 11:58
Bernhard Schrock
Small side windows: if you think that fitting them in is easy you are wrong🙁. The are way too big!!! I spent more than half an hour fitting those on the left side. Glued with Future. The two pieces of Tamiya tape help to hold them with the tweezers.

A lot of detailling! Well done! I like, to see other guys who make the Details as good as they can to get as near as possible to the original. Did the same with the CH-53 GS some years ago.

I enjoy you comments: thx!

The wires for the small ladder (or whatever it is called in English). Did you twine the threads to make a larger wire?
 30 January 2020, 20:58

Klasse. Einfach klasse.
 30 January 2020, 21:36

Did you photoshop another pic of the helicopter into the mirrors or are they really that flawless?😉 👍
 3 February 2020, 10:23
Bernhard Schrock
Slavo, well you got me - the entire project is photoshop... 🙂

Yesterday I began to work on the main rotor. I knew that it would be a lot of work because the JMSDF has an electrical blade folding mechanism. The comparison between the original pictures (shot by Mr. Hunini and Mr. Domke)

and the round kit part shows that the kit part looks very different. Does anyone have pictures from the top?

Really fun watching this work on the main rotors. 🙂 Any tips or problems you can share?
 14 February 2020, 17:58

Congrats Bernhard on another masterclass-book build going across the line! 👍 👍 👍 - As I wrote before, there seems to be no weak angle betraying any weakness - the quality & consistency levels are out of the geiger-counter range😉

I really admire the job on the clear parts - immaculate fitting, no hint of warping or anything betraying the scale. Not sure if I asked - the orange is from the Alclad range? Is it so perfectly translucent out of the bottle or is polishing needed? I´ve tired some yellowing with MRP clear orange, but get some fogging along the way = no real option for cockpits...

Anyway, all thumbs up & looking forward for things to come!

Thank you again: I enjoyed you comments.
Slavo: as usual I used Tamiyas clear paints and thinned them with Mr colors thinner. Yellow with a drop of red and green (in fact should be brown). This mix has a the big advantage that you can wash away the entire paint without damage the clear parts.

Hey Bernhard, you are not allowed to show photos of the original and claim that it is your model😉. See you in Lingen!

Great to see this pop-up again! Not sure you can see so many details, so clean and matching in style, scale appearance & execution in 48-scale anywhere else...

It's just incredible what you show again and again, I would have liked to see the model in the competition in Siebenlehn.
Maybe I can convince you for 2024, your models should definitely raise the bar a bit higher at the PMS 👍 👍 👍 even the most critical jurors would not be able to justify a point deduction 👍 👍 👍

A second wave of comments and commendations! I'm very pleased. Thank you very much. 🙂

Jens:
🙂. Und hatte sogar paar Modelle mit. Viele Grüße YW
