gorbyElsewhere is says the building is MDF (Medium Density Fibreboard) rather than cardboard.

You are right. It's MDF. All the battleset buildings come from sarissa productions:
sarissa-precision.com/
John and me are probably just disappointed that's not plastic.
Some buildings in their battlesdts are made of plastic nonetheless: e.g. the ruins in the "Battle of Bastogne" - set.
