Very interesting finish, the transperancy is just incredible and the weathering too 👍

Thank you very much for all!
@Ben M: this is epoxy resin and medium gloss gel for the waves on the surface.

It is not perfect scene.. This is my second epoxy resin experiment.. And also my first submarine model!

I will say it again. There is so much CRAFTSMANSHIP displayed on this site, it's extraordinary. This is another fine example.

A iirc Korean guy submerged his kit in goo, but the temperature got too hot and he had to work that out by trial and error.

Q: Does adding the liquid goo for the water here, get hot and risk damaging the plastic model in the process of hardening because of the rise in temperature?

Thanks Isaac and Treehugger!
Treehugger, yes I know the issue.
In this case I had no problems as I divided the release of the resin into two steps. I tried not to exceed 3 cm. The problem of overheating is given by the quantity of two-component resin that you intend to mix. If the layer is more than 3 cm it starts to heat up very much.
In my Pilatus PC6 model the base of the sea gave that problem as it is 6 cm high. In fact it deformed the colored plastic base. In the case of a model, yes it could ruin the plastic.

Nice to know. So little by little then is the way adding liquid resin. 🙂

Btw, I guess one has to be careful having a containing box being smooth on all side around, to avoid additional treatment of the resin after hardening, so that you get a clear look into the resin from the outside. Presumably, if you poured clear resin into a container with rough surfaces, the resulting resin would not be transparent from the outside.

Yes, it is!
I recommend using sheets of plexiglass and gluing them with hot glue. This way after you finish you can reuse them for a few more times. You have to be careful to build the containment box well, this way you will have a smooth and shiny surface. Personally I don't have the space and knowledge to carry out polishing work. 🙂

Hm, I wonder what this would look like if one instead of a submarine, used a boat. 🙂 Like heh a 1:350 carrier model. With the top side eh being on the top of the surface and the hull sticking down into the water. Hm, maybe the model would have some natural boyancy that makes the model sit naturally on top of the clear resin without moving around or sinking as the resin harden over time.

Interesting.
Re. that other project you linked to: Any idea how to color the gel? Presumably it was blue of of the bottle.

Sure, I bought some specific pigments to color epoxy resin. You can also find them on Amazon for a few euros. They are powdered color pigments to be added very carefully to the resin mix.

How did you recreate the bubbles from the motor, that looks difficult!
8 November 2023, 10:51
Alberto Michieletto
When the resin was hardening I poked very gently with a toothpick. This allows air to enter and create bubbles.
