These pictures open the construction report on the Tu-91 'Boot', an aircraft that will be difficult to remember as a classic beauty. The appeal lies elsewhere - and you have to look for it a little, but you will find it!
The same applies to the kit: here you also have to search a little to find its appeal. I can already tell that it doesn't lie in good accuracy of fit or beautifully moulded parts. So I'll keep looking a little further. 🙂

Can't wait to see the double propeller attached to the wacky nose. This plane is very strange.

I'm glad you're interested in this build - there will be new pictures soon! I must say, before the release of Modelsvit's new kit I was not familiar with the Tu-91, but since then I am very fond of the peculiar appearance of this aircraft

Nice an weird!
There are photos of testing this aircraft by grafting the fuselage to a Tu-4 wing, which looks extra weird. 🙂

Appreciated, Finn!
Things are slowly coming together here too: after some not-so-inexpensive filling and sanding, the Tu-91 is now ready to make the acquaintance of the primer. The surface is supposed to shine in NMF colour shades, which I imagine will be quite attractive.

Half as bad, Rui, there are currently three: the Boeing 307 - in the background - a P-8 Poseidon from BPK and this Tu-91 here. One (well, quite optimistic) assumption is that these will all be ready still in 2024.

Thank you for these friendly words, Rui!
Yesterday I applied the primer - glossy black from Gunze - and also a little filler on the fine inaccuracies and gaps that were overlooked when sanding. Today I was able to sand off these repairs, which is why the model is still so dusty, which I only noticed in these pictures. I'll show you a few pictures of this state, but in the meantime the first layer of 'aluminium' from Alclad II/ Ammo MiG has already been applied.

A few painting steps have been skipped here; I've been a bit lazy with photos lately: here you can actually see the final exterior of the Tu-91, decals included. I'm curious to see how the filigree undercarriage can be mounted - and whether the weight in the nose is enough to avoid a tailsitter!
The kit itself turns out to be a lot of work, the moulding is rather lame and a lot of filling, sanding and engraving has to be done.... sometimes several times, as the first two pictures show. We'll see - I would like to finish this project rather quickly.

Today I had the opportunity to photograph the Tupolev Tu-91 that was completed yesterday, the NATO code name is apt: the 'boot' looks quite, well, unusual. But I don't want to deny a beauty that results from this quality and the simple, purposefully-beefy shapes! 🙂 The kit is a real joy for anyone who loves filling, sanding and improvising!
I'm certainly glad to have this rare model in my collection - but I won't be building a second one any time soon! Thank you for your interest and your motivating comments, mates!

Looks fantastic, Roland. These kinds of kits are good to do once in a while. You had quite a fight on your hands and you made it into a beautiful build.

Once again you pulled off an amazing job in a small amount of time. Bravo.

Thank you very much for your feedback and the motivation it provides! I'm glad you like it! The Soviets have already put together some strange and interesting constructions.... Thanks to A-model and others, there is still a lot to build..... 🙂

You did a great job on that canopy and the final paint layers. Doing an all-metal finish must have been nerve-racking.

You turned a crude looking kit into a sleek looking model. Quite impressive. And thanks for introducing me to this weird plane - of which I never heard before.
Maybe I overread it, but what forced you to redo parts of the NMF?

Thank you, Michael and Thomas! The -late- reworking of the trailing edges of the wings was necessary because Modelsvit ensures sharp trailing edges by supplying them in one half of the wing, but: this is in the lower wing component, so that an adhesive edge remained visible on the upper side. For a while I convinced myself that this wasn't so bad and could be explained as a "panel line", but towards the end of the build I couldn't bear it any longer, so I unceremoniously filled it, sanded it and - after getting the most expensive toweling paper I could find - taped it off again so that I could renew the NMF. Thank you, Thomas, for noticing this luxury paper - just don't save money in the wrong place! 🙂
