Willkommen Hanno. Nicht ganz sicher ob ich deine Frage richtig verstanden habe. Dunkelgrau ist Tamiya. Hell ist ungefähr 1/5 von dem ursprünglichen Resin Teil von Hitech für einen R-2800. War der „Kern" (Kurbelwelllengehäuse und Getriebe) des Motors, an welchen die 18 Zylinder montiert werden sollten. Damals wohl vor 20 Jahren waren wir aus dem Häuschen, heute ists im vergleich mit Aires, Vector und Co nicht zu gebrauchen... Testors Motor front war unbrauchbar.

What are the green pushrod „cuffs" made of, it's not cable isolation I think ? Very impressive scratching, as always !

Hanno: in der Tat!
Paul R. Matt ist eine Legende unter den Zeichnern, welche in den 60ern unzählige Seitenrisse von Luftfahrzeugen gezeichnet haben. Sehr gut detailiert, mit vielen Hinweisen zur Konstruktion und vor allem korrekt. Glücklicherweise hat er auch den Mr. Mulligan gezeichnet. Vor vielen Jahren vieles aus seinen 2 Büchern kopiert, aber nicht den DGA-6🙁
Habs ein pdf beim Aerofred gefunden und über mehrere Screenshots im Visio zusammengeklebt.
Übrigens: Es gibt ein Foto, auf welchem einer der Piloten (wohl Ben Howard) vor der Cowling steht: man kann den rechten Trichter gut sehen.
Es grünt so grün: Isolation von einem Kabel, mit 0,4 mm Seele. Mit einem scharfen Skalpell längs in zwei Hälften aufgeschlitzt, um es nach der Montage der Stößel aufzukleben.

Maximum attention to detail, as usual, looking real good ! Are these ribs made of streched sprue, or is there styrene rod that is thinner than 0,5mm ?
Did you separate the control surfaces from the stabilizers ?

Thx Hanno. You: the elevators are separated of the surface. The ribs are made via cut with a sharp fresh scalpel. After producing the cut (recessed „panel line" with a „mountain" on both sides) I sanded over very carefully with an elastic pad.

Lochsa River: thank you for the link. It's a beautiful collection of Golden Age planes. I noticed with satisfaction that I have built some of the oldies too. In 1995 I was inspired by Bobs Steinbruns Willow in 1:48 and built the Supermarine S6B.

I didn't know at the time that this kit (Testors Rebox) is in truth the Hawk kit of 1948!!!

In my opinion it is quite stunning which quality Hawk could offer 72 years ago! A lot of companies of today offer the same or worse quality.

Bernhard, thank you for the link. I picked up a copy of that Supermarine S.6B at an antique store a while back, and it's good to know it can build into a nice model. I built a similarly aged Testors rebox of the Hawk Ryan STM S-2, and was very happy with the result. I also recently built a Hawk T-6, which I actually purchased because it was the cheapest model I could find on ebay, and it came out well, the big challenge was covering the engraved national insignia.
I guess the short story is, these old kits can still produce great results with some patience! I am enjoying this Mr. Mulligan quite a bit.

Cockpit is now completed except the auxiliary fuel tank. I calculated the volume with approx. 950 l. In 1:48 there should be aprox. 8,6 ml and this is a lot for the rear compartment!!! I have no idea how shape the tank could have🙁 Or several tanks because the door on the right side was very small. Because of that I decided to build the model in normal configuration: with cushions for the passengers.

I am just enjoying my second coffee and am also enjoying your nice comments. Thank you very much! Indeed, it was a very interesting experience to build a 71 year-old kit. As I have already written there are even today some manufacturers who do this job hardly better than Hawk did in 1949 without CAD and without PC...
Lochsa_River: thanks for your interest. I have glued the plastic strips before installing the clear part. I used Tamiyas CA. The clear part is also glued completely with Tamiya's CA. Always using very little CA at a time. Thus it is possible avoid the fogging.

I think the panel line wash might be the most impressive part.
To have that kind of clean presentation of dark lines against a white background and have them be this clean...very impressive.

Lochsa_River: as usual I use for wash a color only a bit darker than the surface. In the case of MM i used a mix of middle gray (HU125) and clear varnish (for better viscosity). Most of the engraved panel lines are deep enough for additional "shadow-effect".

Moin moin Lochsa-River🙂 No problem, I'm happy about questions. In the most cases I'm using no clear varnish in the wash-mix, just for white.
Usually I'm using no clear varnish for entire surfaces of the model. That would spoil the effect of an irregular shine of the model. My white (in fact very light grey) was glossy enough for a model in 1:48 in my opinion. I'm convinced that there is also a scale effect in the shininess of the surface. A very glossy surface would look wrong in a 1:48 model und even worse in a 1:72....
Sanding:
before sanding I protect the remaning surface from damage with Tamiya tape. In this case I used Micro mesh 3200 for the transition area between the fuselage front and clear part. So I did not have deep scratches and i could polish the area with a cotton swab & polishing paste quickly.
