this is my second jet aircraft I´ve made so far in my recent building history. It is the old and trusty AIRFIX kit which was difficult to get. I did build the Lightning already once when I was a small boy, being attracted by the ugly / beautiful shapes of this specific aircraft. Now I had the plan to make it once again but this time with all my efforts I could give. Aside from the base kit I also obtained what I could get for it:
- Aires wheel bays set
- Aires cockpit set
- Aires exhaust nozzles
- CMK late wheels
- Eduard etched set (not much was needed from it though)
- Eduard canopy masking set
- Eduard Lightning ladder (which really tested my nerves as it collapsed two times during finally glueing together with superglue...)
- Master Lightning pitot tube (sharp as a needle)
- Firestreak Decals
- Plusmodel Lightning pilot
- Coastalkits airfield diorama base
- and finally a plaque for the finished model from Sagitta Modellbau
The kit itself was really easy and nice to assemble. The only real problem was inserting the Aires wheel bays sets between the wings. As expected everything was too thick so I had to file as much away from the resinparts and the wings itself as I could.
I chose a F6 from 11. squadron in Binbrook with a two tone grey low-vision paintjob and a black spine; this ride was flown by wing commander JC Jarron in 1986 and was decommissioned in 1987.
All in all it was a big joy to finish this one and I am proud now looking at it in my cabinet
