Should be nice in the end. The pieces kept well - must have been well stored and not crushed in the box at the bottom of a pile. 🙂 Picking up part way through the build is a good short cut to a finished model. Looking forward to the final steps.

Cheers Alan 🙂
I was inspired by this forum and a couple of recent threads in particular, kits of shame etc.
Whilst there a few things I got right, some tidy paint work and good joins I fear there are a few mistakes I've made back then that I won't be able to rectify now, not without great headaches and I would like to make this a fairly rapid finish so I'll have let a couple of things go....
But I am hoping to put what I have learned recently to good use, I'd like to think I'll make a better job of it now than I would have back then 🙂
I remember thinking that this was such a good kit back then but now I am all to aware of this kits shortcomings, raised panel lines, low cockpit and wheel detail etc. but the decal sheet is reasonable 🙂
Hopefully I won't balls up the final steps 🙂
Cheers Alan 🙂

Arrgghhh I've made a bit of a balls up on the Klear coat !! 🙁
Any advice on recovery from this as certain bits have frosted white a bit, I think it went on a bit thicker than I had realised .....

Future, pledge Klear, will I need to sand it back a bit or should I just wait till tomorrow & Klear coat it again ?

Hard to say. If it is to much sanding should be the best way. I use future too for clear coats. Once dry it is really hard. I never had that problem but it seems it is worth a try. May you try it on a seperate part, add the base color, apply future, wait till it is dry and than sand it and look how it works. Lease keep us informend andere good luck.

I'll post a photo of the issue in a short while, thing is when I wet it goes away and comes back when dry, so i am kind of tempted to let it dry overnight and try again tomorrow and if that don't work I'll try a sanding and if that don't work I'll have to do a little repainting which is going to be right pain now as I don't have that colour any more and seeing as it was such a long time ago when I started I can't remember the colour, shame as I was hoping to get the decalling done tonight... oh well.
And if none of the above works I'll just have to give it a heavy weathering and live with it ...

Hopefully the latest photo demonstrates my dilema with the Pledge Klear coat, the frosty white tide marks, kind of looks like salt stains.
Anyhow, just tried rubbing down with turpintine, was just a guess but looks promising so far, seems to have reduced it a bit, for now, will wait till it dries thoroughly 🙂

Well it seems as though the rubbing down with turpentine has worked !! 🙂
or at least taken away the very worst of the frosting effect, good enough for me to live with 🙂
which is good news for me, lucky guess on my part, reckon I will have to give it another coat though before the decals go down..

yesterdays progress I've fixed the frosting better with a few more turpentine rub downs and given it a few coats of Klear and started painting the canopy.

I hate it when that happens... the frosting of varnishes 🙁 I used to have a lot of issues with Vallejo varnishes but I have since replaced them with Ammo of Mig varnishes and I never had ANY white blobs or frosting issues again. It's obviously more expensive compared to Future but IMHO well worth it 👍
I think Future has already proven itself in that regard, I think(?), but I'd rather pay a little more for a specialized product (like Ammo of Mig varnish) that doesn't turn yellow after a certain period of time 😉

I didn't realise that the Future/Klear yellowed over time... mmm, just as well all the models I have lined up are going to be olive drab Nam vehicles 🙂
I think for now, I'll go with cheap 🙂
I am just pleased I guessed a solution to the frosting problem, hasn't cured it absolutely 100% but it is good enough, has a certain subtle worn charm now 🙂

No no 🙂 I meant to say I wasn't sure about Future because I have never used it and I actually think it has already proven itself to NOT yellow over time. A lot of people use it so if it did yellow, it would probably be red flag galore by now 😉
The rubbing turpentine solution was great 👍

It was a lucky guess, I thought I might as well because I was thinking about sanding and painting and more Klear coat etc. etc. so I had nothing to lose.

did I just make a valuable contribution to the world of modelling ?
cooool 😄
Surely though someone else must have stumbled on this fix before given how many years people have been using Future/Klear....

lol well nice to provide a solution, soluble or otherwise 🙂
well canopy for it is beginning to take shape, but I am having to mask off one strut at a time more or less, 3 more to go and it is done even though the grey is slightly lighter than the rest of the Harrier, I'll just call it colour modulation and hope no one laughs 😄
Decals very soon ! 🙂

Good to note you found a solution that work! I use Future and never had a problem with salt stains, frosting etc. ( knock on wood)! But I have had trouble with the new Vallejo resin mixture of their varnishes too. They came out grey and with streaks. I changed to Windsor&Newton and I'm happy with the varnish.

ah good to know 🙂 I think I did a novice thing and laid it down too thick...
I should have soaked up the droplets with a tissue, ah well lesson learned !
Almost finished the canopy now, one more coat of grey and we're down and then it is the decals next (the exciting bit 😄 )

finally finished the canopy, but I was doing it the one strut at a time method of masking but still seemed to take ages though, anyhow onto the decals finally 🙂
Added a few more photos of the weapons being held in place and the canopy resting in situ, still a few more components to go on but they can all be glued on last of all, saves me breaking them during the weathering etc.
Anyhow, at least my crap camera hides the flaws, but I do need a better one as you can't see the screen wiper I painted etc.

Tonights progress, main decals on weapons and airframe. The big red rectangle, I ballsed that up and it broke into 5 pieces and I have had a devil of a time trying to stitch it back together again, one bit folded over on itself and then broke in two ! What a jigsaw nightmare, jostle one bit into place and it moves another, I am sure you are all familiar with this kind of headache 🙂 Anyhow, I fixed it ok-ish it joins up ok but it aint quite symmetrical... oh well, I wish I had cut into 4 pieces to begin with !! 🙂
Also the roundels on the intakes were tricky due to the compound curve but lots of decal soft and rubbing down worked 🙂 Putting the red dot in separately was a pain but hey. all part of the fun 🙂 fiddly little ones tomorrow 🙂

thank you dude 🙂
its getting there, made a bit more progress today with the decals, though none were as tricky or time consuming as the big red rectangle that broke up into 5 pieces as I was putting it on ..... just 36 little decals to go then weathering etc. and then done ! feels good to approach the finishing post after all these years 😄
Btw Christian you must have some unfinished models lying about somewhere, languishing in some dark recess, occupying the "I must get that done day" part of your mind ? 🙂
If so, and lets face it, it is highly likely, you are a modeller after all, then this is a group for you !! 😄

it is a good job I don't have a better camera otherwise you would see a plethora of errors, I overcooked a couple of the small decals with the decal softener and they kinda went "funny", and I don't mean witty😉
but these are all things I will get right on the next model, honest governor 😄

Well I thought I would knock another one out quick whilst waiting for the Klear coat to dry on the ol' Harrier. and before weathering etc.
Little Nellie, the sport version which has been languishing for years without decals or the arms and wind screen glued on and now it is done, just about 🙂

Gets a little difficult to view your own work objectively sometimes as all you can see is the faults 🙂
Been having some major internet connection headaches over the weekend !! teeeeeedoius !!
Seems to be work ing again though, thankfully, except when I expressed that earlier there were a few more swear words 😄
Anyhow, yeah the sunlight adds something to the realism, though the flowers are probably not the best scale background 😄
Cheers Gordon, I was beginning to wonder if it came out a little heavier than intended, but then if I make it too subtle you won't see it in photos, more practice and I might invest in some Mig oils to see if I can't get a little more control over it etc.
Anyway, I am quite pleased with it, steps in the right direction at least 😄
Airfix 1:48 Spitfire is up for resurrection next 🙂 Also a 1:24th scale Airfix Harrier GR3 arrived today although the canopy is scratched and the front canopy is cracked so they will need replacing ! 🙁 another email to Airfix me thinks.

Made a start on Neglected Kit no.3 🙂
Only 2 or 3 years old this one and not a great deal was done, a few pieces cut from the sprue and some very basic painting.
Todays progress saw wheel wells and flaps painted and the cockpit finished off with some PE seatbelts (from a CH47 but hey, better than nothing 🙂 )
Ready to close up the fuselage for the exterior painting I reckon 🙂

what a difference a little PE makes 😄
though I still feel it could be better, I wish I had done a little dry brushing with a slightly lighter/yellowy interior green for a little more colour modulation and some extra wiring would not have hurt either, the next one will be better 😄

fuselage closed up, filled and sanded smooth. Added some grills to the radiators.
Next is to glue the wings to the fuselage and fill the chasm.
Canopy is a big disappointment on this kit as lenses like a chrystal ball 🙁

wings joined up and filled, sanded etc. panel lines rescribed, faff faff, sprayed silver which took days to dry properly anyhow, ready for some salt chipping, which is something I've not done before and whilst it looks caked in salt at the moment I am just waiting for it to dry and brush away the salt I don't want and leave around the panel edges and walk areas etc.
Another thing I have not done before is preshading so that'll be fun 🙂
One thought that does occur to me is that I am going to have to leave the salt on there after I've done the preshade and grey when doing the green bits which means masking over and around the salt, could be messy ......

At first I thought that was going to be one super chipped paint job, but see that it is before the extra was removed. I have not tried salt either nor preshading. I will follow to see how it works for you the first time around. Keep going - it looks nice. 👍

well managed to complete gum up air brush, kept spitting and then the air was blocked and started pushing paint through the wrong way inside, a bit of mess, had to strip it 3 times and I think I may have over tightened the nozzle as it all feels very different now but I got it working again but anyhow, so glad I got a cheep one !! because there may come a time where I have ruined this one through some dumb mistake or other 🙂

I realise now, hindsight is great 🙂 I have done somethings in the wrong order and that I needed to exercise greater control over the salt placing etc. anyhow, nothing ventured nothing gained 🙂
And to cap it all I got the green and grey the wrong way round on the left elevator, doh !! oh well, it is war after all 😄

It is definitely an interesting approach though 👍 And I totally agree, without experimentation, one is never going to find new ways 🙂
Didn't the putty you used for masking tear off some of the salt/paint when you removed it?

I got the 200ml grey primer with their model air thinners and it left a horrible chalky after taste in my nose and mouth and stunk weirdly !! What Vallejo's are you using ?
creativemodels.co.uk.._200ml_-p-21193.html
for the salt thing I just airbrush some water to get a fine mist onto the model, dowsed with salt, allowed to dry scraped off what I though was most of it (WRONG! ) and then continued to balls it up slightly a lot 🙂
haha, yeah Christian, apparently the crew chief went AWOL on a six month drinking binge !! 🙂
cheers for the encouragement though, hopefully I can tie it together in the next stages ,hopefully 🙂

cheers for the encouragement though, hopefully I can tie it together in the next stages ,hopefully 🙂

I use the exact same vallejo primer as you do. Believe me my wife would have 'notified' me if it had smelled😉 You have to use the salt with larger flakes? I have read about this technique but didn't dare to try. I guess I can test it on something useless bit of plastic. It looks good on your kit.

I don't have a fan and is not needed for acrylics I think. I tried to build a spraybooth but failed miserably, so I'm thinking to buy one like this

I definetly need a spray booth for Alclad II colors, sthe do smell bad and is not healthy.

Patrik, please don't buy it! I have one and they are completely useless! All the air (and fumes) the airbrush forces into the device does a turbulent "spin & roll" and comes right back out again, straight at you.
Instead I have simply bought a cheap but powerful kitchen hood and fixed it above my workbench. You can check my album (below) to see how I fixed it. Make sure you get one that does at least 600 M3 per hour, otherwise there will not be enough suction! I have had one that was less powerful (450 M3 per hour) and it didn't work! Tested with smoke, to check air flow.
Here's what I have: Modeling/Hobby room and (part of) the Stash | Album by JohnVK
The Kitchen hood is behind the lamp in the top of the image. It is a compact but powerful one.
I still always also wear a half-face mask with proper filters (ABEK2) and Gas Tight Safety Goggles (fumes also enter your body and bloodstream through your eyes!).

How do you handle the airflow? The air needs to be vented out somehow and I have to use the window for that. I guess you need a 15cm+ diameter hose for you system?

Standard on most common kitchen hoods is a 10cm or 12cm diameter hose connector. Mine has the 12cm hose, which I have connected to the ventilation system channel of my house (same channel as for my kitchen / shower).
But I can also just have the hose hang out the window if I want. It doesn't really matter as long as the air goes outside 🙂 but I have opted for the in-house ventilation channel because I don't like to have my window open in the winter while I'm working on my models. Pretty cold 😉
Most kitchen hoods also have a carbon filter, same as that portable device. To eliminate smells.
So essentially they both work the same, except... the kitchen hood really works, the other one doesn't😉

cheers Christian,
decals were scraped, the surface really does have 3D effect going on as sprayed the silver first then the Vallejo primer which I didn't allow to dry properly.. doh !! then the salt, then the preshade and camo but when I pulled the salt off the primer was still rubbery and has come away in lumps which has left a distinct texture which is going to make pin washing interesting (messy)
Crew chief is cleaning toilets as punishment for duties neglected, he was caught drunk in a brothel, this truly is a neglected kit 😄

haha yes indeed, this is the condition it was in before The Old Flying Machine Company at Duxford restored it 😄
but yes, it is rather over done I feel, a collection of mistakes on my part, to much salt, not enough drying time for the primer and some paint came away with the masking tape as well, I was aiming for a more subtle wear and tear look. I guess I going to have get creative with a back story for it being in such poor condition 😄

A little bit, or perhaps a bit too much 🙂
my first go at streaking oil stains
12 September 2014, 19:13

It's a little bit heavy😉 but for a first try pretty good 👍
Most oil staining products (personally I use MIG Productions), when taken straight from the bottle, are to intens and thick. To represent oil streaks and spots it is best to work in layers.
The first layer, representing old and dried oil, shoud be heavily diluted. About 70/30 thinner to oil ratio. This layer has the largest coverage on the surface.
The second layer, representing somewhat more recent oil streaks/spots, should be less diluted. About 50/50. This layer covers parts of the first layer but not completely.
The third layer represents fairly fresh oil and covers even less surface. Dilute at about 30/70 thinner to oil ratio.
A final layer would be 100% fresh oil and is done in VERY small amounts of streaks / spots.
Obviously you can do as many layers as you want, creating more intense oil streaks. And you probably should experiment with the dilution ratios because all oil streaking / staining products are different in terms of consistency.
As with most effects: less is more. Subtlety is the key. This is especially the case with a very intense and obvious effect like oil streaks/stains.
Other than that, your Spit looks pretty good 👍 I like the roughed up look 🙂

"a little bit heavy" ! you are to kind John 😄
I've totally over done it !! 🙂 annoyingly though I had it ok at one point until I put my finger on it handling the model doh !!
and that was after having cleaned off the first attempt completely. I did do numerous layers though but didn't think to thin them progressively as you suggest.
The good advice you give (which is always appreciated 🙂 ) is something I will definitely be taking up with my next attempt at this, for there will be another attempt at this for sure 🙂
Though I have seen photos of Spitfires with really heavy streaking on the underside but yeah I really think I have over done many aspects on this model, as well as numerous other mistakes but it is all part of the learning curve and all advice is hugely appreciated, at least I've got some of the basics right like hiding the seem lines haha 😄
Anyhow, as for the wayward crew chief, that would be me, he says that this Spitfire has been suffering with a protracted period (due to heavy fighting) of essential maintenance only, as long as the engine is good and the guns work she is good to go 🙂
Well onto exhaust and MG smoke trails next then glue on the last bits and call it done 🙂
Though there are two things I am considering which is to add a drop grey paint in the matt clear coat just to knock the intensity back a little bit and then use cigarette ash as a final weathering coat to subdue it still further (a Jens trick)
Anyhow, I'll get some more Spitfires and try this all again 🙂
Glad I didn't make all these mistakes on my Eduard Profipack kits !! phew !! I knew I had done the right thing by holding back the excitement for these amazing kits 😄

I kind of did the same to my current StuG IV project, so I reduced some of the weathering. So no rust on the spit, how about a flat tire? I still think you should put seagull-poo on the canopy, these birds are truly experts when it comes to hitting windscreens on cars and you can imagine what kind of high marks a seagull that managed to hit a spitfire canopy would get from its seagull mates, its ultimate realism 🙂

Smallest PE I did was what I think is a landing gear handle in a FW190D, it was 1mm long and the bloody thing was hardly visible. But of course, if I were to display it someone would take notice and remark that it is in the wrong position because when the landing gear are out the handle must be glued in the other position.

yeah burnt gun powder on the wings which I will do better next time 🙂
yeah a little scene would be nice, I am liking "essential maintenance only" like a jinxed mascot, all she needed was to keep the guns loaded and the tank full, anything else was just bad luck for 222 squadron so the motto become "essential maintenance only". Always brought the pilot back though.
Has since been restored by Duxford's Old Flying Machine Company after languishing out doors for some years. When she was rediscovered her guns were fully loaded, her tanks were full and the engine started first attempt, after a check over of course 🙂

MH434. Built at Castle Bromwich in 1943 she saw combat with 222 Sqn. RAF and retired in March 1945. From there, she served with the Royal Netherlands Air Force and later, the Belgian Air Force.
MH434 returned to England in 1956 and was given a full overhaul and civilian markings. She was then flown purely for pleasure, but made her first silver screen appearance in the film Operation Crossbow...she has since gone on to feature in other film and television work, including the films A Bridge Too Far and Battle of Britain.
In April 1983, MH434 was sold at auction to Ray Hanna, who founded the Old Flying Machine Company based at Duxford. MH434 has been based there ever since and is one of the most famous still airworthy Spitfire's in the world today. Ray and his son Mark were both RAF front line combat pilots who were widely acknowledged as some of the finest pilot's in the world. Both men were lost to us far too soon and now Ray's daughter runs the Old Flying Machine Co. based in Duxford where 434 is still based.

I'm sorry Ulf, I really don't know, I got the blurb from some one else who made a Tamiya 1:32 version of MH434 🙂
The clean version (after restoration no doubt) though I tend to think if one is going to model a warbird clean it needs to be a little bit glossy.... nicely done though, I like the engine bay 🙂
I can see me building some more Spitfires though 🙂

haha, probably not, I bought that with the intention of using it as a mold to make body kits for RC helis, at some point.
On the table at the moment is a 1:72 Airfix Catalina and then in all likelihood it will be another 1:48 Spitfire, probably an Academy one 🙂

all that dark green and ocean grey...... haha 🙂
I have the Eduard Spit, Schmitt 109E and the Focke 190 profis, and the all look great !!
awesome detail but I do nor want to ruin them so a few more practice models to sort out technique especially with the airbrush etc.
I'm having a little toss up for what to do for my next TNKR project, I have 3 sci fi robots or a 1:700 Nimitz carrier

think of a rant as the vigorous expression of deep irritation.....
and then there is the people that rant on street corners about the end of the world and such
which be thought of as the vigorous expression that causes deep irritation 🙂
Why Holly, have you been practicing ranting ? have you managed to combine it with raving yet ?
so you can rant AND rave At the same time.... SKILLZ !..! lol 😄

Just watched the video. 🙂 "1/47 scale and you dare to talk to me about surface detail!" Pretty funny. Saw the same clip dubbed by Ricky Gervais after he did not win an Emmy for "Derek".

There are a lot of these Hitler rants out there. I myself have posted one about rivet counters some time ago.

@ Bruno, you´re right, there is no simmilarity between the subtiltles and what Bruno Ganz is really saying in this interview. He is mainly speaking about how he felt about plyaing Hitler, in pretty philosopical way.
If you got the chance, watch the entire movie ("Downfall" / "Der Untergang" ), although I haven´t seen the english version, I can recomend the German one.
