Beside Spitfire and Mustang there are also some more exotic bird species: here a few first pictures of the B 58 from Italeri. An already quite old, but maybe time-honoured kit! The seatbelts and the etched parts of the front cockpit are from Eduard.

Don't wanna miss this one. Looking very nice so far Roland. I'm my eyes one of the curious looking bombers of that time.

Thanks Konrad and Lukasz! I also like these early heavy jets; I think the "Hustler" will do well beside B-45, B-47 and the XB-35 🙂

So that some momentum comes in again: all large assemblies are mounted, smoothed and sanded.
This is a quite simple kit to give the truth the credit. But I like it quite well!

"Gloss black" applied as a primer and for looking of sanding failures everything is prepared to tomorrows first layer of Alclad Aluminum.

Surfaces are now ready for decals. I tried not to overdue the effect of different shades of metal, but at last and in the end it feels as if I had masked and sprayed each one of the panels 🙂 The gloss of the antiglare panel in front of the cockpit window will be reduced of course, but it was important to me to differ the black of the radom and the anti glare panel.

Oliver, good luck with this ambitious Hustler-project; I am looking forward following it!

A few last pictures of the Hustler elegant lines without the somewhat cumbersome wheel-construction. The glossiness especially on the nose/radom will be reduced to a more realistic degree!

A lovely take on this iconic aircraft! 👍 Well planned NMF & overall appearance. So much more fun back in the days when planes were "naked" and markings bore actual color..!😉

Your words are pleasing me indeed, thank you mates! I fully and enthusiastically agree, Slavo!

Wheel struts have been attached and- let´s make a quick count- eighteen (18🙂 wheels sanded, painted and "weighted" down 🙂 The new pictures show the transition of the inner engine suspensions which had to be treated with putty and sanded. The lines of the anti-glare black in front of the cockpit has been repainted -still not visible on this pictures.

Roland Sachsenhofer
Finally finished! The Hustler has taken to its wings- and has left a lot of space on my workbench, even for 1:72! After having had some doubt if that rather glossy silver bird would be easy to photograph I have to confess, that the B-58 is a quite willing photo-model. This build is, despite very few and now invisible improvements in the cockpit and a whole bunch of wiring on the wheels, build out of the box.
I would like to recommend this venerable kit!

Sehr lässig geworden. Did you use Alclad overall? If so - issues with the decal film noted?
9 March 2020, 19:24
Roland Sachsenhofer
Vielen Dank Jürgen! Alcald all over, indeed! No trouble with the decals. On the contrary, I appreciate the Alclad base as a base for the decals; first the metal surface is primed with Gunze glossy clear acrylic, afterwards it is sealed as well. Have you heard of difficulties or experienced them yourself?

I do not have too much of an Alclad experience, but in several discussions with others it was a topic. Speaking for myself I guess the key is to seal the Alclad layer - makes sense, but did not think about it. thx 👍

Came out perfectly, I like that you resisted any urge to make the panel lines more prominent, this looks great in terms of balance & scale appearance 👍 Great plane, great job!😉

Thank you very much for these comments, Jürgen, Slavo, Lukasz, Alec! Alcald is the preferred product to represent metalic finishes, I like the resulting precise and accurate looking surfaces, the wide range of metalic shades and last but not least, their rather easy and trusty way to work with. The B-58 is, of course, a perfect playfield to improve metalic paint skills!

Excellent build and photography! 👍👍👍

@outback: You must be a compulsive scratch-builder aiming to produce scaled replica. A model - by its very nature - is an approximation of the real thing. Some models are very close, some less, like the Italeri B-58. Still looks like a B-58, though. 🙂
19 March 2020, 09:03
Paul Moore
I really like the various aluminum colors! Very authentic. If you put that with a proper background, it would pass for the real thing. Well done.

19 March 2020, 22:24

Thank you all for your interest in the B-58- and thank you for your words on this Italeri -version....
First of all I have to say that the joy of scale modelling for me also consists in remembering from time to time that this is actually just a bunch of plastic. Then the joy is all the greater when you more or less skillfully succeed in impressing a similarity to the real models. I certainly don't want to get annoyed and darken my day for something that, despite all my modeling ambition, falls into the category of leisure and enthusiasm.

By the way, I measured the model and came to a length of 40.5 centimeters including the pitot tube. Converted this results in a length of 29,16 meters in the original. Wikipedia gives the total length of a B-58 with 29.49 meters. This 30 centimetre difference in the original is bearable for me 🙂

Roland, can you translate the last comment? I'm very curious too (even though I didn't mention that) 🙂
20 March 2020, 10:56
Roland Sachsenhofer
Hello Lukasz, sorry, of course!
Fox One asked me if, and if so how, I oriented myself on the original about the arrangement of the different metal tones on the Hustlers surfaces.

Fox One, I have really read up on it and - thanks to numerous available photos in literature and on the internet - also looked into it. The kind of the metal tones orientates itself at the model in so far as I noticed that darker metal sheets at the back part of the surfaces appear more intensified. The implementation of the metal tones on the engine nacelles is then, because it is particularly characteristic for the appearance, very strictly oriented on the model.

Not sure how I missed this beauty. Excellent work on the NMF. Did you use the kit landing gear or opt for metal aftermarket? Can you provide a list of the Alclad colors used for the paint variations? Again a stunning build.
20 March 2020, 11:26
Łukasz Gliński
Thanks a lot, my German is not good anymore these days😉
20 March 2020, 11:48
Roland Sachsenhofer
As is my Polish, I guess 🙂 With pleasure!
Thank you Bryan! Kit landing gear has been used, despite the fact that the moulding of the tires is beyond description... On the front wheel two aftermarket etched parts in form of the grid structures on the upper half have replaced the kit parts. Alclad II paints in the order of their importance: White Aluminum, Aluminum, Steel, Dark Aluminum, Gunmetal. Base was a coat of Gunze gloss black acrylic.
20 March 2020, 12:12
Roland Sachsenhofer
I would also like to note that the Alclad tones were partly overlayered in such a way that the lower color shines through. So of course many nuances are possible.

Interesting thread - so now what are the correct dimensions/proportions? 🙂

Regarding hobby-philosophy, I too am much more on the "overall appearance & feeling + a nice detail here & there..." faction, but I fully respect funded knowledge & the drive towards absolute truth to the original.

Still, I personally focus on things I realistically can do - and changing complex geometry like fuselages or shapes & proportions of wings would not be on my list...

Italeri Kits to me appear like "Wine from the Supermarket" - the variety & quality range is huge, a guarantee there is none... What you see is what you get, have a look, pick them up, make your choice & live with it - some are really good price-to-quality ratio, some better avoided... 😄

I stick with really liking the job done here, but now I´d really like to know about the dimensions...

Alexander Jost
Despite of some possible scale "Italeri-inaccuracies", I find the results of this kit magnificient. Thanks, Roland!

Roland, Just saw your B-58 on Hyperscale. That may be the best Hustler I have ever seen. the construction looks flawless and the bare metal finish is beautiful. The panel color variations are amazing. When I finally build my Hustler I will be using yours as a standard of excellence.
