Hello,
here starts my second Bf 109 project, this time a G-6, flown by Gerhard Barkhorn in 1942. I will depict this fighter in flight, with gear up, pilot figure and whirling propeller... still don´t knowing how I will solve this... 🙂

Really nice... a Bf 109 in car scale😉 I should think about it to compare 🙂 Love the details. I saw some Trumpeter kits in a shop and they seems to be real good.

Hey, thank you all for interest and friendly comments!
The Trumpeters kit comes great relating to fit and accuteness of parts or general configuration indeed... and the Bf 109 as a rather small dimensioned fighter isn´t disturbing hugh in "car scale" 🙂
So Es-haq, this one isn´t likely to fly- not in real and not into the dustbin 🙂

Wow, that instrument panel looks truly amazing. As does the rest of the cockpit of course 🙂

Servus Roland! Bei dir wird's ja immer größer. Was kommt als nächstes? Maßstab 1:1? Das Cockpit schaut jedenfalls schon mal super aus.

Hello!
just returned from some days off in Carinthia I am pleased to read your comments, thank you very much !
This scale has it´s mannerisms, but one thing is for sure: it´s big indeed! Stefan, I have some Trumpeter 1:24 kits and even a rather crude Airfix Fw-190A to do for the coming years- no, I guess there will be no 1:1 scale this life.... 🙂

Hi, thank you very much- quite motivating words!
Fabian, that´s a very useful link; my problem is that this fighter will be displayed attached to the rooms ceilling... it has to show a permanent and believable imitation of whirling prop blades.

What a fine and helpful site Scalemates is! Thanks Holger, exactly what I thought about!
But I would prefer a slightly more precious and "nebelous" effect, so I am thinking about using cotton wool or something like it. I guess that the models plastic blades will be cut down to provide the basis of a rather textile construction- we will see...

Contrary to the ICM -Messerschmitt pleases the "big" version with perfect fitting and a well designed parts layout. There are just minor faults to correct like a necessary widening of the muzzle-openings on the cowling.
To be honest I am truely excited about that model!
Next step will be preshading and masking of the canopy....

Another museum quality replica coming from Roland! I will be watching closely to see which of your techniques can be scaled down to my 1:72 scale stash. I promise to build a 109 before my modelling days are done. 🙂

ohhh ... this is great.
Wow, not to mention the size of the model, I like the details ... the cockpit looks even more real than 1/32 ... you infected me! I'm looking for the Spitfire in the same size ...
How's the handling of a big model like this? Any hints?
Ii'l follow this as well 🙂 ....

Thank you both! If I have infected anybody don´t bother. The symtoms are very near to those of A(dvanced) M(modeler) D(isease). That mainly means a slightly slowed down perception of time and shade-loving attitudes that will hold you back in your workshop, it cures itself within a month, at most two... Because no more time will be necessary to finish a Trumpeter 1:24 model 🙂
Albi, handling such a big scale is in the case of the relatively slim Bf-109 no challenge: it´s not bigger in span than the 1:32 Ju-87G lying on my workbench. (I would really like to know what this scale does to a, let´s say P-47 Thundebolt... 🙂
A real difference to 1:32 is the fact, that you have to do all the detailing and masking and etched part efforts by yourself- no aftermarket exists for the big ones...

AMD thats a good one ... 🙂
in my case ... definitive AMD positive but in the moment no symptoms ... (all on hold ... must be the sunlight and temperatures over 30 C ) 😉
Considering my fear of BIG Models you mentioned a good one ... I have a 1/32 Stuka, a Thunderbolt and last but not least a He 111 in my stash ... Why I'm afraid handling a Bf 109 in 1:24 😉 ( I need a bigger house) ... the pint with the aftermarket parts is worth to be mentioned... hmm ....

Following this, Scalemates could be charakterized as a AMD self-help group...😉
I got Trumpeters Spitfire MkV in my stash- just great! Thinking especially of Trumpeter and my personal detailing claims, the lean aftermarket does not really bother me. These kits come rather well equipped; for example I have build the Messerschmitts cockpit out of the box- besides the seat belts.

The Spitfire V is my favorite ... i have to check out my stores ....
Sometimes its better to work OTB ... made my experience with the Tamiya Zero and a lot of Eduard stuff ... and in the end ... OTB looks much better...

Hello, I did wait for a while till I got some news on this build to post- so I am late to say thank you for these kind words and your interest!
The surfaces have got preshading and a kind of "pre-lighting", something I am doing because it adds live generally and increases brightness.
Over the layers of preshading I did spray Alclad White Aluminum" to prepare some weared of areas that will show blank "metal".
Albi, I share your thoughts about advantages of "oob" to a certain extent. Especially seatbelts made of etched metal actually look... improveable 🙂

Here is update to the recent work done on this little giant... You see pictures of three building steps.
The mottling will be worked over a little bit, especially on the fuselage. I have softened the masked edges after demasking with a free hand held spraysession.

Decals have been applied- a really awful experience, as the broke apart in thousand pieces on the slightest touch... Had to be repaired with white and black paint.

Hi Roland. Some informations of interest for you maybe?!
Luftfahrt Verlag Start has planned to introduce a brand new pictorial book about Barkhorn.
With all his aircrafts as colourprofiles and historical pictures.
Additional this book includes several brand new and not published colour pictures of his aircrafts.
🙂

Thank you Es-haq, Dirk: hey, just in time...but not for this build! I have to confess, it is not so easy to get exact information about the mounts flown by Barkhorn in November 1943. There are plenty of pictures and some profiles, but always with slight variations. They buyer of this model wants it to look like the aircraft in a certain aviation art painting. I sourced pictures of Barkhorn and one of his Bf-109 Gs from autumn 43´and based the appearance on it.

Very nice Roland
I like the mottling, cool!... I can imagine the problems with the huge decals and its not as easy as replace them from the spare box (in this scale).
I'm curios to see the finished one 🙂 ...

Thank you Albi! I did what was within my means...
By now the washing and some wear and tear have been applied by dry brush and with pastells.
Next major step will be the designing of a proper "Barkhorn". I borrowed this guy from one of my old 1:24 Airfix kits: The Fw 190A will, if ever build, surely get along without a Flugzeugführer....
I am curios what he will look like with a some paint!

Some final pics to the Messerschmitt. Surfaces have been finished by now, minor parts like the antenna or control surface balances will be attached during the projects finish. Canopy is just put in place, it shows acceptable fit to the other two clear parts. The lettering "Christl" was painted freehand was acrylic as good as I could.

the pilot was cut into shape to fit into the crowded interior. He got a base coat of Tamiya "Field Blue" over a filling which is a first measure to correct the inopportune Battle of Britain style Mae West.

I added some new pictures showing the finished pilot -and the finished 109. "Plastic-Barkhorn" was dressed with a coat made of Tamiya-tape and completed with etched harness from Eduard. The coats colour has been sprayed, the rest was basically dry-brushed.
As this model will be depicted in flight, I conceived the approach to the visuel phenomenon of a whirling prop you can see here. Its of course not perfect but, as I think, looks better than fixed propeller blades...
Thank you for all the comments and ecouraging words!

I like the the way you painting Barkhorn, "he" looks so real ...
The effect of a whirling prop is always a problem, but you're right its better than a fixed propeller .

I am glad "Barkhorn" is appealing to you, Albi.
I guess seemingly whirling propellers on a motionless modell are a paradox that can´t be solved... and that´s the fascinating thing with it!😉
