F-4G, VF 213 Black Lions, USS Kitty Hawk 1966
Using CtA sheet No 3 "Welcome to the Jungle"I modeled this F-4G in an experimental camouflage used by the Navy during the Vietnam war. I used the Italeri F-4 C/D/J kit No 1373 built out of the box without any modifications. I am not sure if the G had the larger wheels and wing bulges of the types listed above.
I was building this more for the camouflage finish than anything else with a closed canopy. The interior is basic but good enough for a closed canopy. I just deleted the rear control column for the Navy version and hand painted some seat belts to provide some contrast to the seats as seen through the canopy.
The base coat was Tamiya primer. I traced the panel lines using a fine tip black Sharpy hoping the shading would show through light finish coats. I finished the model using Vallejo Air in the appropriate FS colors of Dark green 34079, Field green 34097, Dark gray 36081 and White 37873 in light coats trying to retain the panel line shadows. I was semi successful, it worked well on the light underside but was variable on the darker top colors.
I also used Flory grime pigments after painting to help highlight the lines again and also to provide some weathering to the aircraft.
I used the kit supplied weapons of AIM 7 Sparrows and AIM 9 Sidewinders to depict the aircraft for a MIG CAP mission.
